Dry Eyes Treatment

What Is Dry Eye?

Dry eye is a disease in which the tear film is either unstable or insufficient, thus leaving the surface of the eye dry and easily irritated. The result of this disruption is blurred or fluctuating vision, light sensitivity, burning, and a constant feeling that something is trapped in the eye. Once the tears cannot cover the surface correctly, visual comfort and clarity start to decrease daily. Once the tear film is destroyed, the eye surface becomes dry which results in the burning, itching, watering, sensitivity to light and temporary visual oscillations. The reasons are usually multifactorial, including both age-related changes and screen use, environmental triggers, pharmacological causes, autoimmune diseases or the dysfunction of the eyelid glands. Due to the fact that dry eye may be caused by a combination of multiple factors, a careful assessment is required in identifying the underlying cause. It is necessary to establish routine care with an ophthalmologist or optometrist and to effectively control symptoms as well as to prevent long-term discomfort in the eyes and vision.

Different Types of Dry Eye Disease

Aqueous-Deficient Dry Eye

Viral Pink Eye
Occurs when the lacrimal glands fail to produce sufficient watery (aqueous) tears. This causes loss of the middle level of the tear film, resulting in dryness, irritation, and intermittent vision. Patients also experience a scratchy feeling and often feel uncomfortable when engaging in prolonged visual activities.

Evaporative Dry Eye

Bacterial Pink Eye
Occurs when the tears dry up too quickly, which is typically due to dysfunction of the meibomian glands. These glands usually provide the oil layer that does not allow rapid evaporation. The tear film is disintegrated more rapidly when it is blocked or inflamed, resulting in burning, stinging, and excessive reflex watering.

Mixed Dry Eye

A combination of reduced tear production and an unstable tear film. There is a reduced amount of tears produced by the eyes, and the ones produced do not remain long enough to cover the surface. The combination of both mechanisms contributes to the persistence of the symptoms and possibly, a multi-step treatment plan.
